Removing laminated film cleanly

Any of you that are using Kapco or a similar material for laminating film to glass have undoubtedly had a failure and needed to remove the film from the glass. You’ve also probably found that the longer the film is on the glass, the harder it is to remove the film and laminate cleanly without leaving bits of adhesive behind. Paint thinners work but are more difficult to use than you might think.

One solution to this is to take a container large enough to hold the glass and fill it up with water so that the glass plate will be submerged. Now add a few ounces of vinegar (this is where art comes in) and put the plate into the water.

Gently peel up one corner of the film and you should find that the acidity of the vinegar helps to release the adhesive. The more you expose to the vinegar water the easier things become.

Keep peeling off the laminate and by the end, if you’ve been reasonably careful, you should have a nice clean piece of glass ready for re-use.

While I haven’t tried this yet, you can probably also use this technique to remove a failed backing of Oracal without ruining your hologram since vinegar water won’t harm the emulsion and can even improve printout resistance.
