Interesting things I saw today 5/21/10

Friday night found us heading out to Grayson country again for a set workshop.

There was only a single sets worth of people but they were fun and enthusiastic dancers. We spent the evening teaching footwork and movements for the Antrim Square set.

Interesting Things I Saw Today 5/8/10

The last SCMA ceili for the 2009/2010 season. Most of our regulars had other places to be and we thought it might end up as a very private session between us and the musicians. Happily a few regulars and a bunch of new people came out and we had two full sets!

We’ve had a great time with the Kilfenora Plain Set and the Antrim Square. Finally, we’re back at the ArtCentre of Plano for the SCMA Céilí on April 24. Celebrate spring by kicking up your heels!

NTIF 2010 A Dogs View

Re-greasing a Celestron CG-5 mount

I recently bought a used Celestron CG-5 mount and decided that after verifying basic operation, the next thing to do was to take it apart and do some basic maintenance.

It’s well known that the Celestron mounts made overseas need some rework to get full performance out of them. They frequently contain “lube” that is more like glue, the gears need polishing to remove burrs and many of the plastic rings look they’ve been cut from milk bottles.

I’d done the same maintenance job on my Super Polaris mount which is almost identical to the CG-5 except that the CG-5 has brass gears and ball bearings rather than just sliding plastic rings.

Armed with information from Astroboy I set about disassembling my CG-5. Full pictures of the dis and re-assembly are in the gallery, selected pictures will be included here. I also won’t cover every single step since it’s already been covered by Astroboy.

Moycullen workshop in Phoenix

Had a good time at the Irish Cultural Center in Phoenix on Wed night. I was in town for work and took a bit of time after the first day to drop in and teach a workshop on the Moycullen set. Susan and I recently learned it from both Mick Mulkerrin and Pat Murphy and it seemed a good one to pass on.

There were three full sets by the end of the night and everyone did really well.

Bats on the Moon

I don’t think I’d believe it if I hadn’t seen it but while I was looking at the Moon this evening I saw a bat flying across the face of the Moon.

It was flapping madly for about 10 seconds before it finally reached the edge of the Moon and went out of view. Cool.

Wish I’d had the camera set up at the time.

Dancing at Lochrann’s March 22, 2009

Wheee! Another fun session at Lochrann’s. We were joined by a few more dancers and a new musician whose name I unfortunately failed to get.

We had the back room largely to ourselves and a few spectators and it was an afternoon full of great craic!

We danced a couple of the Ballyvorney Jig Set, the Clare Lancers, Three Tunes, Four Hand, Siege of Ennis and a bit of stepping about.
