Cafe Malaga

I’ve been on a Sangria kick ever since going to El Cerro in Orlando and Susan and I made it out to Cafe Malaga in McKinney for lunch on Saturday.

It wasn’t be best experience we’ve had there but the company was good and while the Sangria was bloody expensive, it was tasty.

Unfortunately the ladies who have been running the cafe every other time we’ve been in were nowhere to be found and they’d left it in the hands of the men. This was a mistake. Not a fatal one, but not a good one either. I’ll admit that I generally have a bias against waiters as they typically aren’t as service oriented as women. This time was no exception.

The temperature yesterday was in the 100’s and apparently the cafe AC was out. They had several fans running which at least kept us somewhat on the cool side and made it feel as though the cafe was in Spain. Perhaps even Malaga.

It took forever for the waiter to come by and get our drink order and by the time that happened we also knew what we wanted to eat.

Tip for the waiter… When it’s 100+ outside and your AC is out, bring icewater over immediately. Even if you aren’t ready to take our order.

We started off with the Sampler which was a collection of pita triangles, hummus, artichoke tapanade and baba ghanoush with a carafe of Sangria on the side. Very tasty.

We moved on to some Gambas, sauted shrimp with lemon and garlic and more Sangria. Definitely recommended.

Up to this point the service was "ok" although nothing to write home about. From here the service went back downhill. We ordered the Chorizo and received our third carafe of Sangria pretty quickly but it took forever for the chorizo to come out. When it did, it was too crispy. The chorizo was cooked almost all the way through with just a sliver of soft meat on the inside. It had a good flavor but was too much like eating meat croutons.

The final disappointment was the bill for the Sangria. $18/carafe is a bit much since you only get four small glasses out of it.

I’m sure we’ll go back but it’ll probably be a while.
