Puffy Coffee Cozy

I was working with some knit/crochet ladies on making coffee cup cozies for charity and Puffy coffee cozy2could not find a crochet pattern that was fun but not too tough, so I made one up. The nice thing about this cozy is that the rows of puffs or baubles fit comfortably between the fingers. Let me know if you have any trouble or questions. Happy crocheting!

Supplies

G hook

worsted weight yarn

Stitches

ch hdc puff rsc

Puff = [Yarn over (yo), insert hook through desired stitch, yo and pull up a loop] 4 times in same stitch. Yo once more and draw through all 9 loops on hook. Puff complete.

Notes

Work in the round, joining at the end of each round.

Chains at the beginning of a round count as one stitch, i.e. Ch2 + 31 hdc counts as 32 hdc.

Work reverse single crochet loosely in final round to avoid adding too much tension.

Directions

1. Ch 32.

2. Sl st in 1st ch to join.

3. Rotate around end instead of turning to work in far loops of beginning ch.

4. Ch 2, 1 hdc in 1st st after join and in each st around. Join in top of ch 2. (32 hdc)

5. Repeat step 4.  (Check the fit on a coffee cup. You can undo and add or remove multiples of 2 sts to adjust the size.)

6. Ch 2, 1 hdc in same st as join and in next 15 stitches. 2 hdc in next st. 1 hdc in next 15 sts. Join in top of ch 2. (34 hdc)

7. Ch 3, 1 puff next st. [Dc 1, puff 1] around. Join in top of ch 3.

8. Repeat step 4. (34 hdc)

9. Ch 2, 1 hdc in same stitch as join and in next 16 sts. 2 hdc in next st. 1 hdc in next 16 sts. Join in top of ch 2. (36 hdc)

10. Repeat step 7.

11. Repeat step 4. (36 hdc)

12. Rsc in each stitch around. Slip under a loop inside and down a bit from top edge to hide the join.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

  1. The stitches are super easy but I just keep cniomg out with a big flat round piece LOL I’m sure i’m doing something wrong but can’t figure it out. I am doing all the rounds as half double crochet (2 in each) but then when I see the end of the instructions i’m seeing that in Rnd 2 at some point I had to do something in a ST (Single stitch). the only thing I can think is that after I make the 8 hdc in the 3rd ch from hook I then make a hdc in the 2nd original chain from the hook?..but then that seems like it isn’t right. LOL help? You wouldn’t happen to have a video tutorial of you doing this? I think i’m struggling getting from one row to the other without having a huge flat round piece at the end at some point does it eventually just fall into a hat shape? meaning I should just keep doing my rounds until it does?Thank yoU!!!

    • Hi Adewale. You say you have a “big flat round piece” — does it look like a flat disk, like a DVD but with a bigger hole in the middle? You also mentioned making 8 hdc in a single ch, so I suspect you’re making 2 hdc’s in each previous stitch in a round, then maybe 3 or 4 in each stitch in the next round, etc. If I’m on the right track, the problem is that you should only make 1 hdc in each stitch. ———————————————————————————-

After you make the 32 chain stitches in step 1, you connect the end where your hook still sits in #32 with chain #1, the very first one you did. This is the join; it closes the circle that will be at the bottom of the coffee cup. Have the pretty side of the chains facing outward, then ch 2, so you have a little bit sticking up out of the join. Next, make 1 hdc in the 1st chain to the left of the join. Make 1 hdc in the next chain, 1 hdc in the next after that, etc. until you have 1 hdc in each chain stitch except for the joining one which has 2 chains instead. Now do a slip stich to connect the loop on your hook with the back loop of that 2nd chain coming out of the join. That’s the end of step 4, and it should look about like a little bracelet. ———————————————————————————-

Now you have a new join and a round of 31 hdc’s + a Ch2, for a total of 32 places where the next round of stitches can go. You do the same stuff here — 2 chains sticking out of this join + 31 hdcs, one in each hdc below it. At the end of this, your bracelet will be wider, more like a guy’s watch band, but it won’t fit a bigger wrist. You still have only 32 places where the 3rd round of stitches can go. ———————————————————————————-

Does this help? I don’t have a video, but I could try making one if the cartoon light bulb above your head hasn’t lit up yet. :-)
